President John Evans Atta Mills, will on Thursday, be the Special Guest at the ground-breaking ceremony to start the construction of 30,000 housing units for Ghana’s security services. The ceremony, which will take place at the Ghana Police Training Depot at Tesano, in Accra, will signal the start of a process towards fulfiling a major manifesto promise of providing the security services, especially the Police Service with decent duty post accommodation. A statement signed by Deputy Minister of Information, James Agyenim- Boateng, stated that, government remains convinced that the quest to guarantee the people total peace and security cannot be attained when our security personnel continue to face such serious challenges with where to lay their heads. “Our security service personnel continue to sacrifice in their pursuit of peace and security in the nation. The least we can do for them is to ensure that we provide them with decent housing and government will continue to work towards achieving that objective. We will not turn our back on them,” he stated. According to the Deputy Minister, the STX Ghana Housing Project will make the poor living conditions of our security personnel, such as inadequate accommodation, leaking roofs, collapsing walls, etc. a thing of the past. The statement explained that the entire 30,000 units will not be in Accra but spread across the country and will service all the security agencies. It also assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President Mills’ social contract with the people of Ghana remains binding as government works to build its promised Better Ghana. “The promise of an Action Year that sees the start of major infrastructural projects across the country has already began with the Vice President John Mahama cutting the sod for the start of work on a $100 million 60-kilometre road linking Assin Praso in the Central Region to Asante Bekwai in the Ashanti Region. That project will also see the construction of a bridge over the River Pra”, the deputy minister added. The completion of the road project, the Vice President observes, will “open up our country, make the carting of farm produce to marketing centres easier and reduce travel time to health centres.”
